Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE)
PTFE offers the broadest chemical resistance and lowest coefficient of friction of any solid engineering plastic, with a continuous operating range from −200 °C to 260 °C. Pure PTFE has limited wear resistance under load; filled grades (glass, carbon, mica) trade some chemical purity for significantly improved wear life and dimensional stability. FDA-compliant unfilled grades are used widely in food and pharmaceutical processing equipment.

- Is PTFE the same as Teflon?
- Teflon is a DuPont trade name for PTFE; the underlying chemistry is the same, though formulations vary by manufacturer.
- Does PTFE require FDA certification for food use?
- Unfilled, food-grade PTFE is manufactured to comply with FDA food-contact regulations. Filled grades are typically not food-contact suitable — confirm grade selection for your application.
- Why choose filled PTFE over unfilled?
- Filled grades address PTFE's tendency to cold-flow (deform under sustained load) and improve wear resistance, at some cost to chemical purity and friction performance.
